Our Winn Dixie Party was a success! The students hung their dog pictures while we listened to the wonderful music of Nolan's uncle. Then they ate the lovely food and watched the movie attentively. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our party by sending in food, drinks, napkins, plates etc. There was not a morsel of food left! I never knew how much kids liked egg salad and pickles :) It was fun for the students to watch the movie and compare it to the novel.

Last week the students made some beautiful pumpkins using coloured chalk and Alymers glue on black construction paper. They remind me of a beautiful fall day. They are hanging in the hallway and have received lots of compliments from the other staff and students.

This Friday afternoon we will be having our Winn-Dixie celebration. We brainstormed what to bring to our party, similar to things that were involved in the party during the last chapters of the book. I told the students to make sure to ask their parents tonight to make sure it was ok to bring these things. Here is a list of what we will need for the party:
-Egg Salad Sandwiches cut in quaters -Pickles -Candy for "Litmus Losenges" -Punch -Pictures of dogs (from the internet or your own dog) -Music -Paper plates -Paper cups -Napkins Please talk to your son or daughter as to what they offered to bring. You can let me know by commenting to this post or through your son or daughter at school. During our celebration we will be watching the movie "Because of Winn-Dixie" which we will then compare to the book using Venn-Diagrams. The students are really looking forward to the celebration!! The virtue for the month of October is Compassion. This month was our class' turn to complete the virtue bulletin board as well as lead the school virtue assembly at the end of the month. After discussing what compassion means (to care deeply about the struggles of others, so much so that you want to do something good to help them), we came up with the idea to do an accostic poem to share with the school. The students were paired off, and each pair was given a letter. Each group had to come up with a sentence or thought about compassion beginning with their assigned letter. Here is what the student's came up with: C - Can't you see that people all over the world are struggling from all sorts of bad things, we should help them. O - Others should be helped when they are in need. M - Maybe if the world was more compassionate, there wouldn't be so much suffering. P - People should be passionate about helping homeless people. A - Always help people who are less fortunate. S - Sadness doesn't belong in the world. S - Sorrow can scar you, let's make a difference. I - If the world were more compassionate, it would be a better place. O - On the street, if you see a homeless person or family, you should help them. N - Nobody should suffer. On Friday afternoon the students were hard at work on the Winn-Dixie lapbooks. These projects will be finished up this week. They look great so far!
