Another day, another pattern! This time, students had to create their first pattern using 2,3,4 or 5 square tiles. Their next figure had to grow on their first figure and so on. They had to state their pattern rule and try to give the algebraic formula in order to predict the next figures. (ie Figure # x 3 = # of tiles).

This is Edward. Ask your child how to play "input numbers = output numbers", Edward's favourite game! We learned this game on Thursday as a way to practice looking at pattern rules and making predictions about growing patterns. Here is a link to play a fun online version of this game. Scroll all the way down to "Robot Rule Game" www.mathies.ca/games.php Another fun game to try is Diamond Drop with Whole numbers. Have fun! I love pattern blocks. There are so many fun ways to incorporate them into math learning. Today, the students had to create their own Inukshuk and use T-charts to document their growing patterns. Afterwards, they had some time to play with the blocks and create their own patterns and designs.
