You can help your child at home to prepare for the quiz by having him/her practise measuring various household items, by describing which unit of measure they would choose and why and by practising converting measurement from one unit to another.
For the past week and a half the students have been working on measurement in math class. They have been practising estimating and measuring various objects around the class using millimetres, centimetres and meters. They have also learned to convert measurements from one unit to another (for example 2, 35 m = 234 cm), and how to choose the most appropriate unit of measure. In the last two days the students have been looking at how to find the perimeter of a given object or form. The students were informed that there will be a quiz on Monday on all the things we have practised in the last 2 weeks.

In Language Arts, we have just begun to look at persuasive writing. The students learned that persuasive writing is when you try to convnice your reader of your opinion. During last class, they were asked to convince their seat partner that they should eat their favourite meal for dinner. I think some of the students were pretty convincing (especially Matthew L. with his delicious sounding fajitas and Bella with her description of pulled pork! Yum!)
We looked a little bit at the format of a persuasive writing piece as well. Using my favourite meal as an example, the students learned that their piece must include an introduction, 3 reasons and a conclusion. They were then asked to write their own piece about their favourite meal. They worked really well and I thought they did great for their first try! PS, I apologize in advance if you find your child is trying to convince you to let them do things as I did ask them to practice at home! |
