In math, the students have been working a lot on their mental math strategies as well as 3 and 4-digit addition and subtraction. We like to play a game with dice and the white boards to have a little extra fun with our number facts. You can easily play this game with a dice and paper at home if you do not have a white board. Just ask your child to explain the rules...it's a great way to have fun while working on math skills.
January has been a very busy month! We've had lots of cold days, but that didn't stop us from enjoying our 3 swimming days over at South London Community Pool. Despite the frigid walk to and from the pool, the students had a great time swimming and getting some extra physical activity. In Science class, the students have been talking about forces and structures. Their final task was to build a bridge out of popsicle sticks. The test will be to see how much weight each bridge can hold when placed in between 2 desks. Here are some of the finished structures...the test will take place on Monday! Earlier this month, our class was responsible for leading the January New Year Mass for the school. We focused our mass on embracing our talents and really letting our gifts shine with this New Year. Here is a poster the students made displaying all of their unique gifts and talents. It looked quite nice on display at the alter during mass.

In math class the students are learning some strategies to help them solve 2-digit addition and subtraction problems "in their head". The goal is to try to teach students strategies to add and subtract numbers where they do not need to rely on using paper. Some strategies we have discussed are:
1. Counting up by 10's then adding the 1's. 2. Adding a "friendly number" such as 10 or 20. 3. Adding the 10's together then the 1's together then finding the total. There are many online games you can find that can help your child practice mental math. I have linked a game we have played in class under "resources". |
