We have just finished our read-aloud of Because of Winn-Dixie in English class. The students really enjoyed the book and so did I! The students are now in the process of completing their lapbook projects. I have posted the lapbook project components under the resources link for you to take a look at. All work for this project must be completed at school, however feel free to make suggestions to your son or daughter and encourage them to bring in stickers or other decorations to add to their lapbook.

This week we began our second math unit: patterning. This unit will involve investigating and describing a variety of geometric and numeric patterns. We will look at different growing and shrinking patterns and make predictions about patterns using t-charts. To introduce geometric patterns and alphabet models, the students each were given the opportunity to make a bracelet. They were then asked to describe their pattern and make an alphabet model for their pattern. The students were allowed to keep their new bracelets! The student's most recent art task was to draw a self-portrait. I always like to start the year off with self-portraits because it's fun to look back at ourselves at the end of the year and see how much we've changed! I took a picture of each student for them to use as a reference as they were drawing. They had to make sure to fill up most of the page and also to use their power colouring. This is when you colour very hard using pencil crayons in order for the colour to appear more vibrant. I think they turned out awesome! I hung them on the wall at the front of the room where they will stay for the rest of the year :)
