We are working hard in class with our elapsed time problems. You can help your child to solve everyday problems involving elapsed time by asking questions like: "If your piano lesson starts at 5:45 pm and we arrived at 5:22 pm, how long do you have to wait for your lesson to begin?". There are so many possibilities that you can discuss with your child around the dinner table to in the car. Please note that grade 4 students need to solve problems involving hours and minutes and grade 5 students need to solve problems using seconds as well.

We have just begun to look at the concept of Elapsed Time in math class. Elapsed time is the measure of time that passes from one given time to another given time (example: The film started a 3:15 and ended at 5:45, how long was the film). Today we looked at 2 different strategies to help us measure elapsed time:
1. The timeline method 2. T chart method We also can use a clock to count the number of hours and minutes that pass. Many students felt as though they could "solve it in their head" and I explained that they need to show how they arrived at their answer using pictures and numbers. |
